SPOKANE, Wash. – Sophomore
Sophie Hausmann and freshman
Clara Moyano won both of their first-day matches as the University of Idaho women's golf team went 1-1 Saturday at the Gonzaga Match Play tournament.
The Vandals defeated Gonzaga 4-2 before falling 2-4 to No. 25 Brigham Young University.
"Today was a great first experience at match play in a collegiate event," coach
Lisa Johnson said. "we made a lot of birdies and solid pars."
She had praise for the underclassmen victories against Gonzaga.
Danika Palm and Moyano both won 6 and 4,
Michelle Kim won 5 and 3, and Hausmann won 2 and 1.
Against BYU, Hausmann and Moyano both one 2 and 1 for the Idaho victories in the match.
"Hats off to BYU," Johnson said. "We made too many bogeys early on, however we fought back to give ourselves an opportunity at the end. We ran out of holes.
"I'm extremely proud of how well the ladies handled the different format and the 36-hole day."
The Vandals conclude the tournament with Sunday's match against Seattle University.
