Gold team takes the win in the intrasquad meet

The University of Idaho swim and dive team's two-day intrasquad meet came to a close with the Gold team coming out on top.

"It was a competitive two days of racing," Mark Sowa said. "Overall, we were happy with our focus and our enthusiasm but there was also some rust that needed to be dusted off as well."

The meet started with diving which put the Gold team in the lead from the first event.

"It was great to see seven healthy divers on our boards, which speaks well to the depth of that side of our program," said Sowa.

The swimming started off with 200 medley relay where the Black team pulled out the win by .12. The Black team continued its momentum through the 1,000 freestyle where its swimmers went first, second, and fourth to pick up 15 points in the event along with first and second place finishes in the 100 butterfly. The gold team continued to hold strong picking up their first place finish in 400 Freestyle Relay to finish off Friday night. Yet, it wasn't enough to get the lead as the Black team was ahead 84-83 at the conclusion of Friday night's events.

Saturday began with the 400 medley relay with a first and third place finish for the Gold team which helped gain ground on the Black team. The Gold went on to win 6 individual events one of which was the 3-meter diving competition. The meet ended with a tight race in the 200 freestyle relay where the Gold team placed first and third to make the final score of the meet to be 189-163.

The sophomore class alone won 11 individual events over the course of the meet including the 3-meter diving. The freshman also had their first taste of competing as Vandals.

"Our sophomores, in particular, looked like they are ready to take the next step forward in their development. I also expect our newcomers to be much more relaxed next time out," Sowa said.

The Vandals open the regular season when they travel to Colorado Oct. 28-29 to compete against Northern Colorado, New Mexico State and Colorado State.

"We are looking forward to racing down in Denver in a couple of weeks," Sowa said.
