LAS VEGAS, Nev. - Freshman
Clara Moyano fired a five-under 67 during the first day of the Las Vegas Collegiate Showdown as the Vandals started the 54-hole tournament with a 10-under 278 - good enough for second.
Junior
Kendall Gray was just one stroke back at 68, while sophomore
Michelle Kim turned in the other sub-par round of the day for the Vandals with her 71. Sophomore Sophie Kim is at even par 72 and senior
Amy Hasenoehrl is at two-over 74.
"Clara had a break-through round today," coach
Lisa Johnson said. "Her game has been improving steadily this fall. This golf course suits her long ball off the tee and she capitalized on her short approach shots to the green."
Johnson said the Vandals started strong with a number of birdie putts falling to set the tone for the rest of the day - all on a course where they feel almost at home.
"We've had great success on this course, including winning a conference championship," Johnson said. "It has made the transition from last week to this week very encouraging.
"It's fun to be competing at the top of the leaderboard against some of the top universities in the country."
Baylor is the tournament leader with a 15-under for its first 18. The Vandals are second and are followed by San Diego State and UNLV - both at eight-under.
The tournament resumes Tuesday and concludes with the final 18 holes Wednesday.
