Austin Rehkow has kicked a lot of field goals in his career but Saturday's 27-yarder – his fourth of the game, at Louisiana-Monroe was his first game-winning kick. He is second in the Sun Belt in field goal percentage (.857) and field goals per game (2.00). Saturday's game was the fourth of his Vandal career during which he was successful on four field goals. His other three in the victory at ULM were 28, 34 and 32 yards. With his four field goals at ULM, he moved into second on Idaho's career field goals attempted (77) and career field goals made (56) lists. He trails Trey Farquhar (2009-12) by just two made and four attempts. His percentage of 72.7 also ranks second to Farquhar's all-time record of 75.9.
Rehkow's impact as the Vandals' punter also is significant. The Vandals are second in the league and ninth nationally in net punting (42.90) because of his length, accuracy and hang time. Idaho's punt return defense (1.38) is second in the league and 11
th nationally.
Jordan Frysinger, a senior receiver from New York, made a big splash Saturday with a 71-yard touchdown reception – the longest of the season for the Vandals. He totaled 100 receiving yards – the best of the year for a Vandal receiver, on four catches.
Idaho's 414 yards total offense also was a season best for the Vandals. Adding balance to the passing game was
Aaron Duckworth's rushing. He had a career-best 121 yards on 16 carries, which includes a season-long 55-yarder that set up Rehkow's game-winning kick.
The Vandal defense also came up big with four turnovers – three interceptions and a fumble recovery. Idaho ranks seconds in the Sun Belt and ninth nationally in interceptions with nine and is second in the league and 22
nd nationally in total turnovers with 12.
Kaden Elliss and
Jayshawn Jordan are Idaho's interception leaders with four each – and they each had one Saturday at ULM.
Tony Lashley had the third interception Saturday and
Russell Siavii added a fumble recovery for the fourth turnover of the game.
Rehkow wasn't the only player on special teams to make a highlight-reel play.
Qendarrion Barnett and
Kendrick Trotter teamed up on punt return with Barnett blocking Dayton Balvanz's punt and Trotter scooping it up and returning it 19 yards for the score. It was Idaho's first blocked punt for a touchdown since Daniel Micheletti scored on a four-yarder at Virginia in 2011. Trotter's score is one of just 32 punt return touchdowns this season.
The Vandals return to the Kibbie Dome Saturday for the Hall of Fame game. Kickoff against New Mexico State is 2 p.m. The Aggies are coming off of a double overtime home victory over Louisiana-Lafayette.
