MOSCOW, Idaho – Idaho men's hoops got the season started on the right foot, defeating Corban University 90-67 on Saturday evening in Memorial Gym.
Â
"It's always good to get that first win," said head coach
Don Verlin. "We made some adjustments at halftime and they executed. We had some silly fouls. Some poor discipline on the defensive end got us into those positions, with the foul trouble, and we had to fight through it."
Â
Four Vandals finished in double-figures, led by
Victor Sanders' 19. Sanders played just 20 minutes on the night due to foul trouble, but managed to stay in rhythm and lead the squad in scoring.Â
Brayon Blake had a tremendous opening night in the silver and gold, earning the double-double with 13 points and 11 boards. The Vandals had just two double-doubles all of last season.
Â
Perrion Callandret and
Arkadiy Mkrtychyan had 14 and 12 points, respectively.
Â
Corban hung in with Idaho for much of the first half, leading for more than four minutes in the opening frame. The Vandals would turn things on in the second half, coming out hot from the first whistle and growing their lead throughout.
Â
The Vandals also dominated on the glass and in the paint. Idaho outrebounded Corban 49-26, including 18-11 in offensive boards. Idaho outscored Corban 42-16 in the paint.
Â
Idaho shot the ball well all night, finishing at 49.2 percent (32-of-65) from the floor and 57.1 percent (8-of-14) from range.Â
