OGDEN, Utah—Idaho sophomore
Mikayla Ferenz was named the Big Sky women's basketball Player of the Week on Tuesday. It is the second time this season a Vandal has been awarded the honor.
Ferenz, a Walla Walla, Wash., native, helped the Vandals break a five-game losing streak with a 74-71 upset at Wyoming last week. The second-year guard recorded a career-high 34 points in the win. Ferenz, one half of Idaho's "Splash Sisters," scored 28 points through the first three quarters, including 12 of Idaho's 14 points in the third.
Ferenz closed the game with career-highs in field goals made and attempted, going 13-of-24 from the field, while hitting 3-of-7 from long range. She also added five rebounds and an assist.
Her 34 points are the second-most in the conference this season. She jumps into fifth in the conference, averaging 16.5 points per game.
The honor marks the first weekly award of her career. Ferenz was the 2016 Big Sky Tournament MVP in her rookie season. Junior
Geraldine McCorkell was previously honored as Player of the Week after the first week of the season.
Idaho will open the home schedule on Saturday, Dec. 17, against Central Washington. It will be the Vandals' first game in front of a home crowd since its exhibition against Multnomah on Nov. 5.
