OGDEN, Utah – Torell Stewart has been incredible over the last two weeks and the Big Sky Conference has taken notice, recognizing the senior as this week's Defensive Player of the Week.
Â
Stewart wasn't called on often at Seattle U but she made some big saves when Idaho needed her the most. Her biggest came just minutes before the Vandals leveled the score, sprawling out to her right to prevent what would have been a devastating 2-0 deficit. Idaho would go on to win, 2-1, the first win against Seattle U in program history.
Â
She earned her second shutout in the last three games on Sunday, making five saves against in-state rival Boise State. The Broncos picked up the pressure in the second half, but Stewart was up to the challenge yet again as Idaho earned its first win in Boise since 2003.
Â
"Really happy for Torell, she has been coming into her own for the last two or three weeks," said head coach
Derek Pittman. "I thought she came in exceptionally prepared for the preseason. She's playing with a lot of confidence right now, directing and doing all of the things that we're asking of her behind the back line. And when she's called upon she has made some massive saves for us. Not only in Hawaii but to get the two results this past weekend at Seattle U and Boise State. It's a testament to the work that she has put in up to this point. I'm really happy for her and I'm excited for the whole team in being able to celebrate this award with her."
Â
Stewart was also unbelievable two weeks ago in Hawaii. The Vandals didn't get the results they wanted, going 0-1-1, but Stewart was incredible in net.  She made 14 total saves, with many coming in jaw-dropping fashion. She currently boasts a .816 save percentage and a 0.94 goals against average for the season.
Â
It was also the first time since 2010 that the Vandals won a pair of non-conference road games in the same weekend, click play on the video at the top for the full highlights from an extraordinary weekend.
The Vandals are picking things up at just the right time, with conference play just two weeks away. It's a one-game weekend coming up, with a trip to CSU-Bakersfield on Sunday. Check back with GoVandals.com later in the week for more information.
