PULLMAN, Wash. – Track and field is back at it on Friday and Saturday, taking part in the WSU Open. The women's triple jump, the men's pole vault and the men's weight throw will kick things off on Friday, beginning at 4 p.m., while the Saturday events will begin at 10 a.m.
The Vandals are fresh off a solid opening week performance at the Vandal Indoor Invitational last week that moved a handful of Vandals into the top-five in the Big Sky in their respective events.
Arphaxad Carroll leads the Big Sky Conference in the long jump after posting an indoor personal best of 7.33 meters last week. Carroll is no stranger to being on top, having won the long jump competition at the Big Sky Outdoor Track and Field Championships last season.
Karina Moreland posted the second best triple jump in the conference so far this year, leaping 11.79 meters on Friday in the Kibbie Dome. The freshman will be competing in a pair of events this weekend, taking on the triple jump again as well as the 60-meters.
Katelyn Peterson also ranks second in the conference, after leaping 1.65 meters in the high jump. A number of athletes are tied for second in the event, and the current leader went just three one-hundredths of a meter higher at 1.68 meters.
Zion Stuffle set a new personal best in the 60-meter hurdles last week, finishing in 8.35 seconds, the fourth best time in the Big Sky so far. Stuffle will also be competing in the 400-meters this week.
Rechelle Meade ranks fifth in the long jump after going 5.74 meters last week. Meade will be competing in the high jump and the 60-meters this week.
Blake Gerling also ranks in the top-five, sitting in fourth in the 800-meters, but will not be competing this weekend.
