WALLA WALLA, Wash.—The Idaho men's tennis team got off to a hot start to the spring season with a 7-0 win over Whitman College on Saturday.
Idaho (1-0) made quick work of Whitman in doubles to open the match. The Vandals dropped just two sets combined in the three matches.
Estaban Santibanez and
Lucas Coutinho scored Idaho's first win of the day, 6-0, in No. 2 doubles. Idaho picked up a pair of 6-1 wins from
Mark Kovacs and
Carlos Longhi Neto and
Felipe Fonseca and
Guilherme Scarpelli to open 1-0.
Santibanez, playing in the No. 4 position, picked up Idaho's first singles point. He won in straight sets, 6-1, 6-1 over Whitman's Jake Hoeger. Fonseca continued Idaho's dominance on the court. He picked up a 6-2, 6-1 win in No. 3 play. Kovacs clinched the match for Idaho. He scored a 6-2, 6-2 win over Alex Hwang in on the No. 2 court.
"Anything can happen in the first match of the season," head coach
Abid Akbar explained following the win. "We are happy to get a convincing win over one of the top Division 3 schools in the nation. It was a good way to get ready for a tough match with Portland on Sunday."
???????Longhi Neto, playing in Idaho's top position, fought back in his match to get the win. He got down 1-0, but won the second and third sets, 6-0, 6-1, to clinch the win. Coutinho and Scarpelli closed out the day for the Vandals with wins on the No. 5 and 6 courts, respectively.
The Vandals will take on Portland on Sunday. That match is set for a 10 a.m. PT start.
