PORTLAND—Idaho men's tennis closed the opening weekend on Saturday. The Vandals fell to the Portland Pilots, 6-1, finishing the road trip 1-1.
The Vandals got out to an early 1-0 lead, earning the doubles point to start the day.
Mark Kovacs and
Carlos Longhi Neto took care of business on the No. 1 court, defeating Portland's top pairing, 6-1. UP drew even with a win 6-4 win in No. 3 play.
Estaban Santibanez and
Lucas Coutinho clinched the point for Idaho with a 6-4 win on the No. 2 court.
Portland tied up the match winning the first singles match of the day, 6-3, 6-3, on the No. 1 court. The Pilots took a 2-1 lead when Mathieu Garcia defeated Kovacs, 7-6, 6-3, in No. 2 play. Idaho was unable to keep pace with Portland the rest of the match.
Guilherme Scarpelli had Idaho's last shot at picking up a singles win. He lost a tight 7-6, 6-4 decision to UP's Felix Fan, closing out the day.
Idaho has one more non-conference match, Feb. 4, at Gonzaga before its first Big Sky match of the season.
