SALT LAKE CITY—Idaho women's tennis is midway through the ITA Mountain Regional hosted by the University of Utah. Junior Marianna Petrei is into the round of 16 in the singles bracket, while a pair of doubles teams has advanced to the round of 16.

Five of Idaho's representatives won their opening match on Wednesday. Laura Sparato got Idaho off to a solid start with a quick 6-2, 6-0 win over Weber State's Dominque Beauvais. Maria Tavares, Lucia Badillos, Maggie Chen and Shion Watabe each picked up first-round wins to move on in the bracket.

Petrei, the No. 2 seeded player in the tournament, got a bye to open the tournament. The back-to-back Big Sky MVP began her play in the narrowed down field of 64. She opened with a solid 6-3, 6-0 win over Nevada's Lili Fekete. Her second win thus far came against Northern Arizona's Eirene Granville, 6-2, 6-1.

Badillos picked up her second win against Camille Verden-Anderson of Denver to advance to the round of 32. The Idaho senior could not get past Nevada's Claudia Herrero, falling 6-1, 7-5.

Idaho also had early success in the doubles bracket. Tavares and Sparato paired up for a tightly contested 8-7(6) win over Montana's Julia Ronney and Eimear Maher. Watabe and Chen also battled a Montana pair, taking the match 8-5.

The team of Petrei and Badillos got going in the round of 32, following a first-round bye. They took down New Mexico State's Harlas and Rubio. Tavars and Sparato also advanced with a win over Wyoming's Elisa Koonik and Tessa Van der Ploeg.

The tournament continues on Friday and is set to run through Sunday.
