OGDEN, Utah – The 2017 Big Sky Cross Country Championships are here, with Idaho and the rest of the conference traveling to Weber State on Saturday. The women's 5k race will get started at 10 a.m. Pacific, while the men will follow with their 8k race at 10:45 a.m. Pacific.
The events will be streamed live on Facebook and can be accessed through the link provided above. Live results are also available.
Both squads enter the Championships with high expectations after taking fourth in the meet last season. The men's team has been incredibly balanced all year, with three different individual winners in four races this season.
One of those winners is
Dwain Stucker. Stucker led the way for the Vandals at the Dellinger Invitational at Oregon nearly a month ago, with Idaho facing its toughest competition of the year.
"I think our team overall has been phenomenal, just running with the guys, everyone has been pushing each other," Stucker said. "In practices we're all running together and pushing each other. It's been fun."
Stucker has scored for Idaho in all four races this year, one of three Vandals to do so.
"My year has been going pretty great. I had a great summer of training. I really just wanted to see what could happen if I just put in my best and followed through. Personally, I see myself up with the top group of guys. It's really been fun, all of our top guys have been really interchangeable, it's great."
But what was it about the Dellinger that brought out the best in Stucker?
"Personally, I like muddy races. At the Dellinger it was raining during the race and everyone was running around the golf course, a pretty soft ground, so I feel like that gave me a good edge on the competition. Everyone else is hurting, but I personally enjoy that kind of situation and I took advantage of it. I'm not entirely sure what the conditions are going to be like at this race, but I'm going to try and take that mentality with me. I know everyone is going to be hurting out there, so I might as well make them pay for it.
"I just like it because I can enjoy it, as opposed to other people that might have the mentality of 'oh no, it's raining.' The way I see it is everyone out there is racing in the same conditions so you might as well just enjoy it."
Competing with a young squad that took fourth last year, the Vandals have their sights set on leaving a mark in 2017.
"Our team goal is to compete. Hopefully we'll outrank what we did last year. Our team is looking phenomenal, probably the best that I've seen since I've been in the program. I think we're going to go out and compete our best and see where we come out."
