PRINCEVILLE, Hawaii- Idaho men's golf shot a 10-over 298 Monday, in the second round of the Warrior Princeville Makai Invitational. The Vandals improved by six strokes over Sunday's first round, but were unable to make up any ground in the team standings. The final round will tee off Tuesday at 8 a.m. HT, from the Makai Golf Club at Princeville on the Hawaiian island of Kauai.
Idaho junior
Enrique Marin is in a tie for 27th individually at 4-under. Marin shot a 71 Monday, birdieing two of his final five holes to post a second straight day under par. Despite the 1-under 71, he fell 14 spots in the individual standings on a day the individual course record was broken by three strokes.
"This field is full of players who are really close to making the jump to playing professional golf," said head coach
David Nuhn. "It's great for our guys to be able to come out here and compete with teams and players of this caliber. Our guys need to not be content with shooting even par. We need to go out there and believe in what we're capable of. I'm extremely pleased with how Enrique has been playing. I think we'll see him make a good move again tomorrow and maybe get back into the top 20. It will be a tall task, but the opportunity is there."
Marin is the lone Vandal who has played the Makai Golf Club prior to this week. After an opening round that saw more than half of Idaho's lineup shoot 79 or higher, all five Vandals were under 79 in the second round.
Klaus Ganter shook off a first-round 80 to card a 74 Monday, Idaho's second best score of the day.
"I think we should be shooting under par as a team," Nuhn said. "I would suspect we will be more comfortable after a few days of playing on this course. We've seen some of that youthfulness rear its ugly head. Today was better than yesterday. Tomorrow should be better than today."
