PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif.—Idaho junior
Marianna Petrei continued her strong efforts at the Riviera/ITA Women's All-American Championships on Friday. She continued to upset higher-ranked opponents in one of the more historic runs in program history.
The back-to-back Big Sky MVP dropped into the consolation bracket after working her way through qualifying play to make the main draw round of 32. Petrei, ranked No. 71 in the ITA's preseason rankings, suffered a 6-3, 6-3 setback No. 30 Aliona Bolsova of Florida Atlantic on Thursday.
Petrei's tournament continued with consolation play on Friday. She won her first match via walkover against 13-ranked Mayar Sherif from Pepperdine.
Petrei then faced No. 11 Estela Perez-Somarriba in quarterfinal play. Petrei stunned Perez-Somarriba in the first set with a 6-2 win. Perez Somarriba evened up the match with a 6-4 result in the second set. Petrei recovered in the third set, completing the upset with a 6-4 close.
The Udine, Italy, native, moves into the consolation semifinal round on Saturday. Her opponent has not been determined.
