Idaho women's swimming and diving hits the unofficial mid point of its season this week with the Phil Hansel Invitational in Houston. THE SCHEDULE: The three-day meet will feature preliminary heats each morning and finals in the evening. Prelms for the individual swimming events will begin each day at 10 a.m. CT.  Diving prelims will take place at noon CT, with the consolation final immediately following. 800 FREESTYLE RELAY DEBUT: Friday will mark the first time this season Idaho competes in the 800-yard freestyle relay. With the 200- and 500-yard freestyles two of the team's biggest strengths among the individual events, head coach Mark Sowa is excited about the relay's potential. The Vandals boast four swimmers in the top 20 of the WAC in the 200 freestyle, including Emma Schlyter and Sarah Hall who sit fifth and sixth, respectively.

THE COMPETITION: The meet will feature 10 teams. In addition to Idaho, Houston welcomes Air Force, Colorado State, New Mexico, North Texas, Northern Colorado, Rice, Tulane and Vanderbilt for the 2017 Phil Hansel Invitational.

THE HISTORY: This is the sixth time in the last seven years and the third season in a row Idaho has traveled to Houston for its mid-season invitational meet.

ABOUT PHIL HANSEL: From 1975-1996, Hansel was the most influential man for the University of Houston swimming and diving team. He guided the Cougars to more than 70 dual meet victories and ten Top 20 finishes at the AIAW and NCAA Championships. All of that hard work paid off, as Phill Hansel was inducted into the Hall of Honor on Nov. 14, 2008.

UP NEXT: The Phil Hansel Invitational marks the last competition of the fall semester for Idaho. The Vandals will embark on a training trip during winter break before returning to dual-meet competition Jan. 26 and 27, at home against Northern Colorado and Oregon State. Those meets will serve as the final tuneups for the 2018 Western Athletic Championship, which take place Feb. 21-24 in Houston.
