MOSCOW, Idaho—Idaho junior
Marianna Petrei's impressive fall season helped her jump up 32 spots in the Intercollegiate Tennis Rankings.
Petrei moved up to No. 39 in the latest edition of the rankings. She began the season at No. 71.
The back-to-back Big Sky MVP had an impressive run over the fall. She went 11-6 over the fall, picking up four wins over ranked opponents. She qualified for the Main Draw at the Riviera/ITA Women's All-American Championships with wins over then No. 43 Vladica Babic (Oklahoma State) and then No. 73 Jada Hart (UCLA). Petrei fell in the first round Florida Atlantic's Aliona Bolsova Zadoinov, ranked No. 2 in the latest rankings. Her tournament run came to end at in the consolation semifinals.
The Udine, Italy, native's, success did not run out. She posted six wins at the ITA Mountain Regional Championship to claim the singles titles.
Her fall season came to a close at the 2017 Oracle ITA National Fall Championships. Petrei fell to No. 49 Paige Hourigan (Georgia Tech) and No. 38 Gabriela Knutson (Syracuse). Hourigan remained at No. 49 in the updated rankings, while Knutson moved up to No. 17.
Idaho's quest for a fifth-straight NCAA Tournament appearance will begin in the spring. The Vandals have won three straight Big Sky championships and a poised to make a run at a fourth this season. Idaho won the 2013 Western Athletic Conference title before leaving for the Big Sky in 2014.
