PHOENIX- Idaho women's swimming and diving suffered a 162-81 loss Friday, at Grand Canyon. Maren Sljevold earned the Vandals' lone win of the day, claiming the one-meter diving event.
"Grand Canyon is a really good dual meet team that is even better at home," said head coach
Mark Sowa. "You may not see it in the score but we did a lot of things better today and I like where we are headed."
Seljevold recorded a 252.90 on the one-meter springboard to edge out GCU's Mennattalah Elmidany (252.68). Seljevold took third on three-meter. Teammate
Janelle Lucas was second in the three-meter event and third on one-meter.
Freshman
Emma Schlyter and junior
Sarah Hall swapped places Thursday, trading their marquee events with each other. Schlyter made her 1,000-yard freestyle debut and took second in 10:39.68. Her time is the second best in the event by a Vandal this season, trailing only Hall (10:31.70).
In the 200-yard freestyle, it was Hall turning in a runner-up performance as she clocked a 1:53.72. Her time is the second best in the 200 freestyle by a Vandal this season, trailing only Schylter (1:53.43).
The Vandals (2-4) also picked up a second-place finish from
Alexis Schmidt in the 200-yard butterfly. Schmidt touched the wall in 2:08.38, the fastest time by a Vandal this season and nearly two seconds faster than her previous season best. She had the fastest opening and closing legs in the meet, but could not catch GCU's Estela Davis Ortiz for the win.
Idaho concludes its season-opening road swing Saturday, at Northern Arizona. The meet begins at 11 a.m. PT from the NAU Aquatic and Tennis Center.
