PULLMAN, Wash.—Idaho women's tennis blanked Northern Colorado, 7-0, in Big Sky action on Sunday. The Vandals quickly raced out to a 4-0 lead and finished strong in the latter matches to secure their fourth sweep of the season.
Idaho (5-3, 3-0 BSC) got things rolling in doubles action. It took the Vandals just 40 minutes to close out the first point of the day.
Marianna Petrei and
Lucia Badillos led off with a quick 6-1 win at No. 1.
Maria Tavares and
Ana Batiri clinched the point for Idaho with a 6-3 win in No. 2 play. The Vandals also led on the No. 3 court, but left the match unfinished.
In singles play, Idaho was again led by the top of its seedings. The Vandals raced out to a 3-0 lead, picking up wins from Petrei and
Jessica Brzozowska. Petrei played fast, winning all 12 games from UNC's Anna Battersby. Brozowska won 12 of 13 games in her win over Marissa Baca in No. 3 play.
Badillos clinched the match for Idaho at No. 2 singles. She took care of the Bears' Beth Cotton, 6-2, 6-0.
"These guys [Northern Colorado] came off a good win last night," head coach
Babar Akbar said after the match. "It was good to be able to get this win under our belt. Today we showed our depth. One of our girls was unable to play in singles. We had our girls step up. The whole team showed up today and played well and that is all you can ask for."
The Silver and Gold completed the sweep with wins from Tavares,
Clair Yang and
Shion Watabe. Tavares opened with a 6-1 start in the first set, but fell behind 3-2 in the second. She battled back to tie the match at 3-3 and finished with a 6-4 win to the set. Yang picked up her first win of the season at No. 6 with a 6-1, 6-2 decision.
Watabe took part in the most exciting match of the day. She and Lily-Ana Kreutzer played to a third-set tiebreak in No. 5 play. Watabe opened with a strong 6-1 first set, but gave it back in the second. She got out to an early 4-3 lead in the tiebreaker. Kreutzer tied the set at four, before Watabe won the next three points, going back up 7-4. UNC won the next five points to take a 9-7 lead. Watabe again battled back to tie the match at nine. It became a race to see who would build the two-point lead first. Tied at 10, Watabe would win the next two points for the 12-10 win.
Idaho will continue Big Sky play next week, hosting North Dakota on Feb. 24. The Vandals will then battle Palouse rival Washington State two days later.
