HOUSTON – The University of Idaho had a strong showing during Wednesday's opening night of the Western Athletic Conference Swimming and Diving Championships with a school record in the 800 freestyle relay and the advancement of five divers in the 3-meter competition.
"The 800 freestyle relay was really cool to watch," coach
Mark Sowa said. "Breaking our school record by four seconds with four sophomores is a sign of good things to come."
Idaho is second after the opening day of the four-day competition.
The 800 freestyle relay team of
Aileen Pannecoucke,
Erica King,
Sarah Hall, and
Leah Fisk finished third with the Vandal record time of 7:21.49. Idaho added points with the 200 medley relay team of Allie Magrino,
Cara Jernigan,
Emily Kliewer, and Maryann Kok. They finished in sixth overall in the event with a time of 1:43.48.
"The 200 medley relay had a bit of nerves starting off but overall was a really good swim with some solid splits," Sowa said.
On the diving side, five Vandals advanced in the three-meter competition with
Indiya Williams finishing sixth (263.20) and
Hailey Kessler finishing eighth (250.15). Other divers who scored in the event were
Janelle Lucas in 10
th,
Nikki Imanaka in 11
th, and
Maren Seljevold in 12
th place.
"Overall it was a good first day and but we still have a long way to go until Saturday," Sowa said.
