SEAL BEACH, Calif. – Play was suspended because of darkness Monday in The Gold Rush but the University of Idaho women's golf team is poised to finish near the top of the leaderboard when the tournament concludes Tuesday.
With one hole to play in their second rounds, sophomores
Sophie Hausmann and
Michelle Kim are among the top 10. Hausman is at four-under for the tournament and in second, while Kim is tied for sixth at two-over. Freshman
Clara Moyano is tied for 39
th at nine over with junior
Kendall Gray tied for 60
th at 13 over and senior
Amy Hasenoehrl is tied for 78
th at 18 over. Freshman
Laura Gerner, playing as an individual, is tied for 28
th at seven over.
Coach
Lisa Johnson was impressed with her team's ability to battle back after a tough start in challenging conditions.
"The team persevered through the first nine holes and made several birdies to end the first round," Johnson said. "In the second round, our ball-striking improved and we made even more birdies. I'm extremely pleased with how well we look coming out of winter. We're looking forward to tomorrow (Tuesday)."
As a team, the Vandals are fifth at 20 over but are just four strokes out of fourth and five out of third. San Jose State is the leader at seven under but only one Spartan had advanced through the 17
th hole when play was called.
