WESTLAKE VILLAGE, Calif. – A young University of Idaho men's golf team showed daily improvement as it played in its second tournament of the spring.
Senior
Ryan Porch led the Vandals at the Southwestern Invitational with his six-over 222 – good enough for a tie for 30
th in the 14-team field.
"It's a matter of being a little more familiar with the course; settling in," coach
David Nuhn said. "It's still very early in the spring. We're making shaking off a little bit of rust."
For the younger players, the transition from the snowy Palouse winter to full rounds on challenging courses will become easier in time. For now, Nuhn said, they need to remember the lessons of the tournament..
"As you get more experience," he said, "as you become more familiar, you begin to know what to expect. You know how to react.
"I've seen improvement every time we play. It's a matter of having it show on the scorecards."
Also for the Vandals,
Enrique Marin tied for 56
th (229), Ethan Atherstone was 78
th (242), J.T. Bloomer tied for 79
th (246) and
Klaus Ganter was 82
nd (257).
Pepperdine won the tournament with an 843. Idaho had a 934.
