SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The University of Idaho women's golf team beat Iowa 5-0-1 in its final match of the SDSU March Mayhem tournament at The Farms to finish the tournament with a 2-2 record.
The Vandals, coming off a strong finish at the Dr. Donnis Thompson Invitational last week, had 4&2 victories by
Sophie Hausmann and
Amy Hasenoehrl to go with a 3&2 decision by
Michelle Kim for the win over Iowa.
The tournament, initially scheduled to be played over three days (36 on Monday, 18 on Tuesday and 18 on Wednesday), was shortened to two days but with the number of matches because of inclement weather forecast for Wednesday.
"It's a different mindset," coach
Lisa Johnson said after the Vandals wrapped up their second match play tournament of the season. "The first day we didn't adjust. We were still focused on playing the course instead of playing the opponent. There were times we should have been more aware of what our opponent was doing."
Still, she had praise for the play of the team.
"It's a different style of play," she said.
On Monday, the Vandals lost 3½-1½ to BYU and were almost finished with their second match against New Mexico before play was suspended because of darkness. They finished their match against New Mexico (a 4-1 loss) Tuesday morning before embarking on their third match (a victory over San Francisco that went to
Clara Moyano's tie-breaking win to determine the decision) and on to the victory over Iowa.
