Kim tied for fourth; Vandals among leaders

NUEVO VALLARTA, Mexico - Michelle Kim is tied for fourth after the first round of the Hawkeye El Tigre Invitational and teammate Sophie Hausmann is just one stroke back and in a tie for 11th as the University of Idaho women's golf team started strong in the 54-hole tournament.

Kim opened with a 73 with Hausmann at 74. Clara Moyano is just two strokes back at 76 with Amy Hasenoehrl at 79 and Danika Palm at 84.

The Vandals combined for a 302 and are sixth after the first round but are just seven strokes off Washington's leading pace of 295.

"The course is a great test of golf, especially this afternoon," coach Lisa Johnson said. "We played well in the wind and managed the course well. We look forward to tomorrow and seeing a few more putts drop. I'm very proud of this team's ability to adjust to new courses, new formats and Bermuda grass."

The tournament continues with 18 holes Monday before wrapping up with the final 18 Tuesday.
