Rehkow biding his time

Austin Rehkow won't be checking his phone every few minutes and he won't be parked in front of a TV as the next generation of NFL players is selected over the next few days.

Granted, he'll have his phone handy in the event of a call from a team but he's going to be hanging out in Las Vegas.

"My dad has a coaching clinic there so he said, 'Why don't you come. We'll play some golf; catch some shows,' " Rehkow said on the eve of the 2017 NFL Draft. "I've never been there except for the few hours when we played UNLV so I said, 'Why not?'

"If the phone rings, I'll be ready."

Rehkow left what likely are indelible marks on Idaho's kicking and punting record books. He leaves as the all-time leader in all categories of both in addition to joining the select Vandals who played in the Shrine Game and earned All-American status. He is the only Idaho player to be a four-time first-team all-conference choice.

Now it's time for the next level. In addition to the Shrine game, he was at the NFL Combine and has spent time drilling with a coach in Alabama. The game, he said, changes after college.

"You see a lot more of the business aspect of it," he said. "But, at the end of the day, you're doing the thing you love."

He said most of the interest he has received has been as a punter but there have been feelers about him kicking and punting. The bottom line, though, is he won't know until his phone rings.

"They just don't give anything away," he said. "They don't hint at anything. Obviously, they don't want other teams to know their plans but it's one of those where you asking, 'It wouldn't hurt to have a little hint, would it?' "

While Rehkow's name has been mentioned as one likely to be called during the three days of the draft, graduated tight ends Buck Cowan and Deon Watson; defensive linemen Tueni Lupeamanu and Glen Antoine, and offensive lineman Mason Woods might surface as well. As for Woods, if the NFL doesn't come calling, a Canadian Football League team surely will want to enlist his 6-foot-9, 330-pound frame.

The first round of the draft begins at 5 p.m. PT Thursday with the second and third beginning at 4 p.m. PT Friday and the final four rounds beginning at 9 a.m. PT Saturday. Click the button on the right for draft viewing information.
