Tennis Set for Big Sky Tournament

PHOENIX—The 2017 Big Sky Tournament will get underway with quarterfinal play on Thursday, April 27, at the Phoenix Tennis Center. Both the Idaho men and women enter the tournament at the No. 2 seed and will begin play on April 28.
 
The Vandal men finished the regular season with a 9-2 Big Sky record, helping the team earn a first-round bye. Idaho will play the highest remaining seed in its semifinal match on Friday. No. 3 Sacramento State will play No. Montana State, while No. 4 Montana will play No. 5 Idaho State.
 
The men closed the season strong, winning their final three matches, Felipe Fonseca led the team with an 11-0 conference record. He finished 18-2 overall, including an impressive 16-1 showing at No. 2. Junior Mark Kovacs put together a 13-6 record at No. 1, finishing 9-2 in Big Sky play. Freshman Esteban Santibanez was 10-0 at No. 5, playing his way to a 16-5 overall record.
 
Northern Arizona, the tournament's top seed, handed Idaho its last conference loss. The Vandals narrowly dropped the match, 4-3, at NAU.
 
The Idaho women enter the tournament in search for its third consecutive Big Sky title and fourth conference championship in a row. Sophomore Marianna Petrei closed the season with her second straight undefeated record in league play. The reigning Big Sky MVP is now 21-0 in the Big Sky in her two seasons, bringing her career Player of the Week honors to six. The Vandals in all went undefeated in the conference. Maria Tavares concluded the season with a 10-0 Big Sky record, finishing 16-2 overall. Lucia Badillos earned a 9-0 conference record. She spent a majority of her time at the No. 3 position, finishing 9-1.
 
Idaho finished the season winners of four of its last five. The team will face the higher seed that advances between No. 3 Montana State vs. No. 6 North Dakota or No. 4 Idaho State vs. No. 5 Northern Colorado.
 
Northern Arizona earned the No. 1 seed, finishing the season 11-0.
