STANFORD, Calif.—Idaho men's tennis returns to the NCAA Tournament on Friday. The Vandals will take on host No. 16 Stanford at the Taube Family Tennis Stadium at 2 p.m. PT.
Idaho (16-7, 9-2 Big Sky) returns to the tournament field after missing out in 2016. The Vandals won the 2017 Big Sky Championship with a 4-0 win over Montana to earn the bid. It is Idaho's second NCAA appearance in the last three years.
The Vandals had a pair of players earn postseason conference honors last week. Juniors
Felipe Fonseca and
Mark Kovacs both earned First Team All-Conference. Fonseca went 11-0 in the Big Sky this season, helping him earn his third consecutive First Team honor. Kovacs was 9-2 in the Big Sky, all at the No. 1 position.
Kovacs and
Carlos Longhi Neto earned First Team Doubles honors. The pair was 17-3 at the No. 1 spot. Longhi Neto also earned Second Team singles honors. He went 8-2 in conference, finishing the season with a 13-4 record at No. 3. Head coach
Abid Akbar was also named the Co-Big Sky Men's Tennis Coach of the Year.
Stanford is coming off a loss to No. 5 UCLA at the Pac-12 Championships. The Cardinal, ranked in the top 45 all season, finished 16-8 on the season. Stanford has notable wins this season over No. 5 Southern California, No. 6 California, No. 8 Texas and No. 25 Illinois. Seven-of-the-eight Cardinal losses came against ranked opponents.
