@VandalsWBB Adds Blankinship, Bersang

Newlee finalizes incoming class

MOSCOW, Idaho—Idaho women's basketball coach Jon Newlee announced two additional student-athletes that will join the Vandals at the start of the fall season on Tuesday. Haley Blankinship (Springfield, Va.) and Sarah Bersang (Horsens, Denmark) will help round out the 2017-18 Idaho roster.

Blankinship, a 5-7 guard, graduated from West Springfield H.S., in 2016. As a senior she averaged 15.2 points per game for the Spartans, helping the Spartans win the Conference 7 championship. Blankinship earned a slate of accolades including: Conference Player of the Year, All-Defensive Team, All-Region First Team and All-State Second Team honors. She was also the Fellowship of Christian Athletes Female Athlete of the Year. She converted 32 3-pointers in 21 games as a senior. Blankinship was also 81-for-96 (84.4 percent) from the free-throw line, second in the state.

"We were looking to add another shooter to our arsenal with Haley," Newlee explained. "I think she is a tremendous 3-point shooter. She has some deep range and will be able to fit right into our offensive flow. Defensively, she has good lateral quickness. She will be able to get out and provide some stops on the perimeter."

Bersang, a 5-6 guard, joins Idaho after a two-year career at Eastern Wyoming College. She averaged 12.6 points per game in her two years for the Lancers. The Denmark native handed out 123 assists, averaging 2.3 per game. Defensively, she totaled 107 steals, including 59 in 27 games as a freshman. Last season she shot 39.7 percent from the field and 30.2 percent from 3-point range, while averaging 3.3 rebounds and 2.2 assists per game. She earned All-Region IX honors as a freshman and was selected to the All-Region IX Defensive and All-Region IX Tournament Teams in 2016-17.

"We wanted a veteran junior college point guard to help solidify that position," Newlee commented. "We would have had only one true point guard on the roast with Karlee [Wilson's] graduation. I think Sarah does a great job of seeing the court. She plays extremely hard. She can finish at the rim and does a great job defensively. I think with her experience, she is going to be a great fit for us."

The pair complete the incoming class for the fall, joining Nina Carlson (Post Falls, Idaho), Natalie Klinker (Fairfield, Mont.) and Allison Kirby (Spirit Lake, Idaho).
