MOSCOW, Idaho—The Idaho men's tennis team finished ranked eighth in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's final Mountain Region rankings. The 2017 Big Sky Champions ranked one spot ahead of Northern Arizona to lead the Big Sky in the region.
The Vandals won the 2017 Big Sky Championship with a 4-0 win over Montana to earn a NCAA Tournament bid. It was Idaho's second NCAA appearance in the last three years. The Vandals took on Stanford in the tournament, bowing out in the first round with a 4-0 loss.
Individually, Idaho placed two players in the singles rankings. Junior
Mark Kovacs ranked 18th, while sophomore
Carlos Longhi Neto was 19th.
Kovacs, a Budapest, Hungary, native, was 9-2 in the Big Sky, playing out of the No. 1 position. He was voted First Team All-Big Sky, earning his second All-Conference honor. Kovacs totaled 19 wins overall, finishing 13-7 at the top spot for the Vandals.
Longhi Neto, a São Paulo, Brazil, native, earned Second Team All-Big Sky honors in 2017. He was 8-2 in conference play. The transfer from Louisville finished the year with a 13-4 record at No. 3 for the Vandals.
Kovacs and Longhi Neto put together an 8-1 Big Sky record, earning First Team doubles honors. The duo went 17-3 at the No. 1 spot on in 2017.
