MOSCOW, Idaho
Rechelle Meade took down a 15-year-old school record in the long jump, and several other Vandals came out victorious at the Vandal Indoor Invitational on Saturday.

"Overall I think we started off great," said director of track and field/cross country Tim Cawley.  "We usually have a 'law of thirds' in the first meet, where the first third does great, the second does average and the third says 'oh, it's the first meet'.  If anything I thought we were more on the higher end, it was more than a third.  Everyone is in a really good place, starting the season better than they did the year before.  That's all you're looking for, growing and building.  This team is growing really well, I think we're in a good spot.  I'm excited, I thought the team competed great."

Meade jumped 6.17 (20-3.00) meters in the long jump, breaking Angela Whyte's 15-year-old program record in the event.  Whyte, a three-time Olympian for Team Canada, leapt 6.08 meters (19-11.75) in 2003.  Meade already holds the school record outdoors, at 6.09 meters (19-11.75).

"Especially with her fall, her training was a little hit-or-miss coming off Worlds, she was a little beat up," Cawley said.  "But to come out in her first meet and tie her all-time PR from outdoors and break the school record, she's just a very talented individual.  Anytime you break a school record you have to be excited."

Several other Vandals took home individual titles on Saturday.

WOMEN

Kaleala Bass placed third in the 800-meters with a time of 2:15.03.  Malaina Thacker finished fourth at 2:21.14.  Kaylee Hove finished fourth in the 200-meters with a time of 25.96 seconds.

The duo of Karina Moreland and Jordyn Rauer finished in second and third, respectively, in the triple jump.  Moreland jumped 11.62 meters (38-1.50), while Rauer went 11.31 meters (37-1.25).

Faith Dilmore placed fourth in the mile with a time of 5:08.45.  Sierra Speiker was close behind in fifth with a time of 5:09.54.

MEN

The mile was a tremendous success for the Vandals, with Idaho taking the top three spots.  Austin Fred led the way with a time of 4:21.23, while Levi Wintz (4:21.93) and Fabian Cardenas (4:22.52) were close behind.

The Vandals dominated the 400-meters as well, led by Kaizer Gillispie.  Gillispie finished first overall with a time of 49.45 seconds, while teammate Mack Baxter was close behind in second with a personal-best time of 49.69 seconds.  Dean Ellenwood finished fourth, posting a time of 50.63 seconds.

Ben Doucette got back to his winning ways by taking the victory in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.09 seconds in the final.

Nik Chappee took second in the 200-meters at 22.08 seconds.  Kasin Pendergass-Anderson finished third in the 60-meter dash with a time of 6.98 seconds, beating his prelim time of 7.01 seconds.  Pendergrass-Anderson would follow that up with a second-place finish in the triple jump with a leap of 15.05 meters (49-4.50).  Jonny Magee finished third at 14.34 meters (47-0.75).

Zachary Short took home the individual title in the shot put with a throw of 17.91 meters (58-9.25).  Quinn Mitchell got the win in the weight throw with a toss of 17.73 meters (58-2.00).

Jenner Higgins placed second with a time of 1:59.27 in the 800-meters, while Britt Ipsen finished second in the high jump at 1.95 meters (6-4.75).  Syklar Ovnicek placed third in the 3000-meters in 8:51.52.

The 4x400-meter relay squad of Baxter, Rikki McCaw, Gillispie and Chappee won with a time of 3:24.42.

"I thought the meet couldn't have run much better," Cawley said.  "Everything was on time, if not a little bit ahead of time.  I think everything went fluid.  Our new runway, for the jumps, created a little bit of separation between the vault and the jumps and made it a little less congested and everything just flowed smoother.  The staff did an excellent job of putting everything together and staying organized.  The team worked hard as well, helping set up and break down too.  I think every year we just keep trying to make it better, refine it, and I think this year it's starting to show that some of that work is paying off."
