MOSCOW, Idaho
– The Idaho women's soccer team has added some depth ahead of the 2018 campaign, bringing in two new athletes for the spring season.  Juliana deTar joins the squad from California and will be a junior next season, while local product Maddie Haas will get a jump-start on her college education after graduating from Lewiston High a semester early.

"Any time we can add players to our roster over the winter break, it is a huge bonus," said head coach Derek Pittman. "We are excited about Juliana and Maddie joining us for this spring semester and we know it will be great for their development and transition into our team."

DeTar joins the Vandals after playing two seasons at Evergreen Valley Community College where she competed in soccer and track and field.  Last season, deTar led the squad and finished second in the conference with 15 total goals and 33 points, earning United Soccer Coaches All-America Second Team honors.  She also added three assists, the seventh best total in the Coastal-South Conference, and was named Offensive Player of the Year and earned a First Team All-League selection.

"As an All-American, we have high expectations for Juliana and what she will add to the attacking side of the ball," Pittman said.  "She is clean technically, can take players on the dribble 1v1, and is a calm goal-scorer around the 18-yard box. One of the big things we need to address for 2018 is scoring more goals and we feel that Juliana has the mentality to not only create opportunities for herself but also create space for her teammates to score as well."

DeTar played her high school soccer for Evergreen Valley High and head coach Sergio Tovar.  She scored 17 goals and added seven assists as a senior, capping off an outstanding high school career.

Haas graduated from Lewiston High School a semester early to join the Vandals and will be a freshman for the 2018 season.  A four-year starter, Haas was named the team captain for her sophomore, junior and senior seasons.  She was twice named to the all-conference team and was voted "most inspirational" by her team.

"Maddie is a player that we have known and have been watching since I got the job back in 2014," said Pittman.  "As a local product out of Lewiston, Idaho, we were excited when she committed to be a Vandal and even more so when she was willing to graduate from high school in December and enroll a semester early for this term. Maddie is a smart, smooth and feisty midfielder that can do the job on both ends, defensively and on the attack. She has great vision, passing ability and awareness of space, which will be a positive addition to our team moving forward."

Haas competed for the Spokane Sounders from 2012-2017, making the long trek up to Spokane multiple times per week.  The Sounders flourished with Haas, advancing to the finals of the Washington State Cup in 2016 and 2017, and winning the Pacific Northwest Winter Showcase in 2016.  The Sounders also advanced to the semifinals at Surf Cup in 2016 and won the Vegas Showcase Bracket in 2015.

Both athletes have their fair share of Olympic Development Program experience as well.  DeTar was a member of the ODP pool from 2011-14, competing at the regional camp in 2013.  Haas has been a member of the state team since 2010, and has been competing in the regional pool since 2012.

Both newcomers also plan to study in the medical fields, with deTar focusing on nursing and Haas intending to major in the medical sciences.

Last season, Idaho added two athletes in January as well, in Bridget Daley and Makayla Presgrave.  The duo went on to start every game for the Vandals in 2017.
