BANDON, Ore.- Idaho men's golf shot 12-over Sunday, and sits in 12th place after the first day of action at the Bandon Dunes Championship. The Vandals were led by
Enrique Marin's even-par 71. The tournament continues with the second round Monday, and concludes with the final 18 holes Tuesday.
"There is improvement that has been made incrementally and we're starting to see those strides," said head coach
David Nuhn. "Our bad golf is getting much better. We are really close to playing great golf as a team."
Nuhn said poor chipping and too many three putts left the Vandals at 12-over, but their ability to make 53 pars and just two double bogeys from counting scores kept them within striking distance of a loaded field that includes six top-100 teams.
"We left a lot of shots out there and we're only 10 shots back of a team like (No. 24) Oregon," Nuhn said. "When we play well, we can compete with anyone out here. We certainly have the ability and the talent. The guys are starting to feel that too and really buy into the idea that we can get it done."
Marin again led the way, carding three birdies to go with three bogeys. He was 2-under headed into the home stretch, but bogeyed two of the last four holes to end the day at even 71.
The Vandals tee off from 9:40 to 10:20 a.m. Monday, paired with student-athletes representing Boise State and Southern Utah. Idaho is two shots back of the Broncos (11th) and four shots behind the Thunderbirds (10th).
Each round of the tournament is being played on the Pacific Dunes Course at Bandon Dunes Resort.
