Ferenz Named Academic All-America

Ferenz becomes second woman in Idaho history to earn First Team Academic All-America honor

AUSTIN, Texas—University of Idaho junior Mikayla Ferenz was named to the 2018 CoSIDA Women's Basketball Academic All-America First Team, as announced by the College Sports Information Directors of America on Monday.

Ferenz is the second Vandal woman to earn First Team recognition and second Idaho student-athlete to do so this season. Wide receiver Jacob Sannon earned First Team distinction for football in December. Hannah Kiser was a First Team selection in 2014.

Ferenz, an App. Actuary Science & Finance major holds a 4.0 GPA and ranks seventh in the NCAA with 22.6 points per game. She currently has the second-best scoring season in Idaho history, totaling 724 points this season. Ferenz is fourth in the NCAA in 3-point field goals (127) and 3's per game (3.97). She has led Idaho in scoring 17 times this season and has scored 30 or more points on seven occasions.

One of her top highlights of the season was her triple-double at North Dakota. Ferenz became the first Vandal since 1984 to record the feat. She put in 15 points and added 13 rebounds and 10 assists, both career highs, in the Vandals' 78-64 win over the Fighting Hawks.

The Walla Walla, Wash., native, is currently sixth on Idaho's all-time scoring list with 1,699 career points. She is fourth in Idaho history, averaging 17.0 points per game.

Ferenz, a 2018 First Team All-Conference selection, was voted 2018 Big Sky All-Tournament. She was awarded Big Sky Player of the Week three times this season. Ferenz was Big Sky Tournament MVP as a freshman, helping the Vandals to its third NCAA Tournament in four seasons. She is also a two-time Big Sky All-Academic honoree.

Idaho's previous Academic All-Americans in women's basketball are Liz Abel (Third Team, 1981) and Alyssa Charlston (Third Team, 2012 & Second Team, 2014).
