Hausmann's Record Day Puts Vandals On Top

Sophie Hausmann matched her own Big Sky Championship record with a 65 Saturday

BOULDER CITY, Nev.- Idaho junior Sophie Hausmann matched her own Big Sky Championship single-round record with a 7-under 65 Saturday, vaulting herself and the Vandals into the lead after two rounds of the 2018 Big Sky Women's Golf Championships at Boulder Creek Golf Club. Hausmann's score ties for the second-lowest round in the NCAA this season, according to GolfStat. She leads the individual standings by four strokes at 6-under (138), while Idaho is five strokes clear of second-place Sacramento State with 18 holes to play.

Hausmann's historic day got out to a quick start as she ripped off three straight birdies on holes two, three and four. After a bogey on nine left her at 3-under making the turn, she recovered with three straight pars. Then she took over the tournament with back-to-back eagles on 13 and 14, grabbing first place by three strokes.

"When I saw back-to-back eagles show up on the live scoring I didn't think it was real," said head coach Lisa Johnson. "Sophie hits the ball so far that this course is really short for her. But she has done such a good job of not being overaggressive. She is playing within herself really well right now."

Hausmann also shot a 65 in the second round of the 2016 Big Sky Championships, also played at Boulder Creek Golf Club. She went on to win the individual title in 2016 in a playoff.

The Vandals shot a 1-under 287, tied for the fourth-lowest single-round team score in Big Sky Championship history. Their 36-hole score of 583 is the third-lowest in conference tournament history.

Michelle Kim put the Vandals under par on the day with a birdie on 18. The birdie gave Kim a 1-under 71 for the second straight day, her best score at a conference tournament in her career. She is in a three-way tie for second at 2-under (142) for the tournament.

"We like this golf course," Johnson said. "This is by far the best we've played all spring, obviously two rounds under par is always a great day. Michelle had a very solid round. She has been great this week. In the three weeks since our last tournament Michelle has put a ton of practice time in on her putting and the confidence is showing."

Freshman Valeria Patino sits in a tie for 15th after a 3-over 75 Saturday, puts her at 7-over (151) for the week. Senior Kendall Gray carded birdies on two of her final three holes to finish off a 4-over 76.

Sacramento State kept pace with the Vandals Saturday by also shooting 1-under as a team. The Hornets are five strokes behind Idaho and three strokes ahead of Portland State. This year's tournament is setting up for a similar finish to each of the last two: down to the wire between the Vandals and Hornets. Idaho won the 2016 title by one stroke over Sacramento State. The Vandals also entered that year's final round with a five-stroke advantage and held on as the Hornets shot a tournament-record 283. Sacramento State got its revenge last season, winning the team title in a playoff after Idaho erased a three-shot deficit on the final day.

"We need to stay loose and relaxed like we have been all week," Johnson said of what she has told the team ahead of Sunday's final round. "Anything can happen on this golf course. All of the top teams have the ability to go low here. The pattern for us through two rounds has been that we settle down at the turn. The plan tomorrow is to settle down earlier because every shot matters. We believe we can win if we stick to our plan and stay in the moment."

Idaho will be paired with Sacramento State and Portland State in Sunday's final round, teeing off at 9:15 a.m. PT. Follow the action with live results at GolfStat.com.
