05/01/2018

MOSCOW, Idaho—The Big Sky men's and women's tennis champions learned their destinations for the first round of the NCAA Tournament on Tuesday. The Vandal men will take on No. 2 UCLA, while the women will head to No. 13 Pepperdine.

The men's first round match will be at 12 p.m. PT on Saturday. The women's first round starts at 1 p.m. PT.

The Idaho men's team defeated Montana last weekend, earning its second consecutive NCAA Tournament bid. The Vandals have won three of the last four Big Sky championships and have been to the NCAA Tournament four times since 2014.

"It has been a great season," head coach Abid Akbar commented. "I think the guys deserve a shot at one of the best teams in the NCAA. We are going have some fun and enjoy the entire experience."

Senior Mark Kovacs makes his third trip to the NCAA Tournament. He leads a team that remains largely unchanged from last season's first-round matchup at Stanford. All six players from the singles lineup against the Cardinal last season will take to the court against the Bruins.

Felipe Fonseca and Guilherme Scarpelli lead the Vandals with 14 wins on the season. Fonseca holds and 11-4 record at No. 4. Scarpelli played a majority of the season at No. 3, going 10-6.

UCLA won its fourth Pac-12 title in seven years last week, defeating USC in the championship match. The Bruins are ranked No. 2 by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA). UCLA boasts four players in the ITA singles rankings, including Martin Redlicki, the top player in the nation. The Pac-12 champions went 14-0 in conference play and 26-2 overall.

The Vandal women earned their fifth straight NCAA Tournament appearance with their win over NAU in the Big Sky Championships. The Vandals are on a run of four consecutive Big Sky titles with a Western Athletic Conference championship mixed in.

"It is fantastic for us," head coach Babar Akbar explained. "We have a few players who have been there [Pepperdine] before. Our younger players are excited to go to the NCAAs for the first time as well. We know we are playing a tough team. We are going to work hard and get ready."

The Vandals and the Waves met in the first round of the 2016 NCAA Tournament. Marianna Petrei and Maria Tavares both played in the match as freshmen. Lucia Badillos, then a sophomore, was also on the team.

Petrei ranked No. 32 by the ITA, will also compete in the NCAA Singles Championships. The Udine, Italy, native, finished unbeaten in Big Sky play for the third consecutive season. She went 9-0 in conference at the top position, finishing 15-3 overall. Tavares was also undefeated in the Big Sky this season. She went 11-0, including a 3-0 record at No. 1.

The Waves are ranked 11th overall in the ITA, having just won their sixth straight West Coast Conference championship. Pepperdine is led by No. 18 Ashley Lahey. The Waves place five singles players in the ITA's top-95. The Waves finished 22-2 on the season and 11-1 on their home-courts.

The women's match will be live streamed. Check back for information regarding the men's tournament.
