Big Sky Outdoor Championships Begin for Idaho

Short wins shot put

RESULTS

MOSCOW, Idaho
- Individual competition at the 2018 Big Sky Outdoor Track and Field Championships presented by Red Lion Hotels Corporation got started Thursday, with several Vandals scoring in their respective events, and another handful moving on the Friday's finals.

Sophomore Zachary Short took home the gold in the men's shot put with his throw of 18.18 meters (59-7.75). Short came in to the event ranked second in the conference. Earlier this year, he won the event at the 2018 Big Sky Indoor Track and Field Championships with a throw of 18.10 meters (59-4.75).  Short is ranked 26th in the West Region, and 50th nationally in the event.

Austin Beyer destroyed his previous personal best in the men's javelin to finish in third. He threw for 64.63 meters (212-0), with his previous best at 60.55 meters (198-8).  Beyer needed a solid performance this weekend to earn a spot in the NCAA Championships First Round.  He did just that, likely moving into the top-30 in the West.

Rechelle Meade placed third in the women's long jump with her farthest jump of 5.93 meters (19-5.5). Meade was ranked fifth in the Big Sky coming into the championships after only competing in the event twice prior. Last year at the 2017 outdoor championships she finished second in the long jump, and she placed third at the 2018 indoor championships.

Andrea Condie finished eighth in the women's 10,000 meters with a time of 35:27.85.  Condie is currently ranked 44th in the West in the event, with the top-48 advancing to the NCAA Championships First Round in Sacramento in two weeks.

Caleb Seely is moving on to the final in the men's 1500 meters. He ran a qualifying time of 3:58.16. Erin Hagen and Krista Story qualified for the 1500 meters final as well. Hagen finished in 4:42.15 and Story ran it in 4:42.45.

Jenner Higgins qualified for finals in the men's 800 meters, running it in 1:54.67. Kaleala Bass also qualified for the women's 800 meters final with a time of 2:11.01.

Competition continues Friday at the Dan O'Brien Track and Field Complex.
