Vandals Tie for 14th, Hausmann ties for 11th

Sophie Hausmann became the first Vandal to finish under par at an NCAA Regional

MADISON, Wis.- Idaho women's golf finished in a tie for 14th Wednesday, at the NCAA Madison Regional, led by junior Sophie Hausmann's 11th-place individual finish. Hausmann finished at 1-under (72-71-72), recording the first sub-par score at a regional in program history. The Vandals posted a 41-over 905 (306-297-302), the program's best score at a regional.

"The team rose to the challenge at a big event on a golf course that played very long and was set up for a championship tournament," said head coach Lisa Johnson. "It was fun to see our team match up with elite competition and we did not back down."

Hausmann tied for fourth among individuals on non-advancing teams. The top three advanced to the NCAA National Championships. She was two strokes shy of forcing a playoff for the final spot.

"Sophie had an outstanding week," said Johnson. "She competed really well and proved she belongs among the nation's elite."

Hausmann made bogey on her second hole of the day before ripping off 12 straight pars to remain in contention for a berth to nationals. A birdie on the par-3 eighth left her on the cusp of advancing with three holes to play. She reached each of the three greens in regulation, but was unable to secure another birdie and finished the day at even par.

The 215 total score turned in by Hausmann breaks the previous school record at a regional tournament by three strokes. She hit 48 out of 54 greens in regulation for the week, including 17 in the final round. Her 11th-place finish is the second best showing by a Vandal at an NCAA Regional.

Freshman Valeria Patino was Idaho's second finisher, tying for 63rd at 10-over (226; 75-74-77). Michelle Kim wrapped up her week with a 4-over 76, Idaho's second-lowest score of the day, to tie for 71st at 13-over (229; 79-74-76).

Senior Kendall Gray concluded her Vandal career with a 5-over 77 to finish at 20-over (236) for the tournament. Gray, along with Hausmann and Kim, became the eighth, ninth and 10th Vandals to compete at multiple regional tournaments in program history.
