Vandal Women Fall In Final Non-Conference Game

SPOKANE, Wash. - The University of Idaho women's basketball team dropped its final non-conference game of the season to Gonzaga University, 70-53.

The Vandals (5-4) were hampered by 20 turnovers in the game, translating to 19 points-off-turnovers for the Bulldogs (7-2).

"The team who is more aggressive offensively is going to be the team who shoots better and that was not us in this game," Idaho head coach Mike Divilbiss said. "Our players were standing around too much on offense waiting for two or three players to do everything and we can not play like that. We need to be more aggressive and more balanced."

Idaho committed 13 of its turnovers in the first half, which translated to a 33-25 Gonzaga lead at halftime.

After the half, the teams played fairly evenly for the first seven minutes as the score stood 45-36 with 12:47 remaining. Gonzaga then put together an 8-2 run over the next four minutes to put the Bulldogs up 15 with eight minutes remaining. The two teams traded baskets for the remainder of the game, however Gonzaga pushed its lead to as many as 19 on three separate occasions in the final eight minutes before notching the 17-point victory.

"Gonzaga has a good program and they did some really tough things to us defensively. We helped them out a great deal, however, by turning the ball over so many times. We have got to get back to practice and work on us before we can worry about any of our opponents," Divilbiss said.

Emily Faurholt had a double-double for the Vandals in the loss, scoring 15 points and grabbing a career-high 14 rebounds. Leilani Mitchell was the only other Idaho player in double figures as she finished the game with 16 points and also added five assists and five steals.

The Vandals shot 10-of-28 (.357) from the floor, compared to Gonzaga's 14-of-33 (.424) shooting.

Idaho will now take the week off for the holidays before heading to Utah State to begin conference play on Dec. 29. That game will begin at 3:30 p.m. PT.
