PULLMAN, Wash. - Nothing went right for the Idaho men's basketball team Saturday afternoon as it dropped a 37-63 non-conference game to Washington State at Friel Court. The 37 points is Idaho's lowest scoring output since a 36-37 loss to Washington State on Nov. 30, 2004 at the Cowan Spectrum.
"We couldn't make a basket and you're only going to hold a good team for so long in their own building," Idaho head coach Leonard Perry said. "Our tempo was right, we just missed a lot of shots."
The first half was tied at 7 with 13:45 to go before both teams went cold from the floor. The Cougars went 7 and a half minutes without a field goal while the Vandals went 12 and a half minutes without a basket. A lay-in from Keoni Watson at the 12:32 minute mark was the Vandals' last made field goal in the half. That basket gave Idaho a 9-7 lead before Washington State went on a 24-7 run to close out the half and a 31-16 halftime lead.
"Our execution was really poor, on both ends of the floor," Perry said. "This won't be accepted, we are a better team."
The two teams combined for 26 fouls in the first half. Idaho went 8-for-12 from the line while Washington State was 11-of-17. The Cougars out-rebounded the Vandals, 21 to 14. Idaho shot a dismal 22 percent (4-18) from the field in the first half.
The Vandals finally broke their drought from the field at the 18:05 mark in the second half with a lay-in from Mike Kale. A basket by Igor Vrzina cut the Cougars lead to 12 at 35-23, but Washington State responded with six straight points for a 41-23 lead.
A jump shot by Rodney Edgerson followed by a tip-in from Chris Henry pushed Washington State's lead to 21 points with 7:06 left in the game. The Cougars would go up by as many as 29 points in the second half on their way to the 26 point win.
Idaho shot 29 percent for the game (12-41) while allowing Washington State to shoot 44 percent (20-46). The Cougars out-rebounded the Vandals, 38 to 27. The pace of the game was controlled by a combined 45 fouls and 49 free throws.
Tanoris Shepard led Idaho with 10 points and four Vandals recorded four points apiece. Mike Kale led the team with six rebounds.
Idaho (0-3) returns to Moscow for its season opener on Wed., Nov. 30 against Eastern Washington. Game time is set for 8 p.m. in the Cowan Spectrum and will follow the Vandal women's game against Gonzaga.
