Hot shooting leads Vandals over Eastern Oregon

MOSCOW, Idaho - The University of Idaho men's basketball team shot 60-percent from the floor Saturday afternoon in a 77-58 win over Eastern Oregon University at the Cowan Spectrum.  The win improves Idaho's record to 2-6 on the season.

"We're not a pretty team but I thought that the kids competed," Idaho head coach Leonard Perry said.  "We had some turnovers toward the end but for the most part we took care of the basketball pretty well."

Eastern Oregon kept things close in the first half and trailed by only three points with 12 minutes remaining.  The Vandals used a 10-2 run during the final minutes of the first half to take a 35-23 lead into half time.

Idaho shot 53 percent (16-30) from the floor in the first half while holding Eastern Oregon to 36 percent (9-24).

"We defended them well in the first half," Perry said.  "I'm a little discouraged about giving up 48 percent shooting in the second half."

The Mountaineers cut the Vandals lead to eight points with 17 minutes remaining in the game on a three pointer from Maurice Thomas.  Idaho responded with an 8-0 over four minutes to go up by 17 points and never looked back.  The Vandals led by as many as 22 points in the second half.

David Dubois led the Vandals with a career high 21 points on 66 percent shooting (10-15).  Dubois also added four rebounds.  Tanoris Shepard added 14 points, eight assists and four rebounds for Idaho and Mike Kale led the team with eight rebounds.

"I just try to do what coach wants me to do and play my role.  If that means scoring then I'll do that, if it means looking for my teammates then I'll do that," Dubois said.  "I just try to do what my team needs me to do in order to win."

The Vandals shot 60 percent (33-55) from the floor for the game and out-rebounded the Mountaineers, 33 to 23.

"I thought we shot the ball well for a change," Perry said.  "That helped us a lot in terms of confidence and executing."

Idaho (2-6) hosts North Dakota State on Wed., Dec. 21 at the Cowan Spectrum.  Game time is set for 7:05 p.m.
