MOSCOW, Idaho - The University of Idaho women's basketball team won their home opener defeating Sacramento State, 48-57, Sunday afternoon in Memorial Gym.
The win moves Idaho to 1-1 on the season. With the loss Sacramento State falls to 1-3.
"I'm really proud of the kids, we focused well tonight and were more ready to play then we were against Portland," head coach Mike Divilbiss said. "We played much better defensively and we blocked out. It was a really good team effort. Getting a win this early in the season is huge it helps the kids in so many ways, Sacramento State is a good club and has the potential to be even better."
Idaho rode a balanced offensive attack, as three players scored more than 10 points for the Vandals, led by game-high tying 13 point outbursts from true freshmen Charlotte Otero and Katie Madison.
"Getting a win was great it was a lot better than losing," Katie Madison said.
Stephanie Cherry also had 13 points to lead the Hornets. Former Pullman High School star Kelli Davis had 10 points for the Hornets.
Idaho got rolling early running out to an 8-2 lead in the games first two minutes. The Vandals kept the pressure up and led by as many as 11 points in the first half. Sacramento State fought back into the game late in the half to make it 23-22 going into the locker room. Davis was a catalyst in pushing the Hornets back into the game as she had four points down the stretch of the first half including a 3-point basket that cut the lead to three.
The Vandals started the second half strong as well, building the lead back up to five with 13:49 to play.
With 2:08 left in the game Jessica Summers hit a jumper from the low post to push the score to 51-41, Idaho. Sacramento pushed back into it cutting the lead back down to six, but Idaho kept the pressure on winning by nine.
The Vandals will be on the road next week for their first of three tournaments this season as they will compete in the Colorado State tournament, hosted by CSU, and featuring Weber State and West Carolina.
