Madison, Summers lead Vandals to victory

MOSCOW, Idaho - The University of Idaho women's basketball team kept its home record spotless on the young season as the Vandals defeated Eastern Washington University, 73-60, at the Cowan Spectrum, Wednesday.

With the win, Idaho improves to 2-3 on the season. The Eagles fall to 3-4 on the year.

"This looks like a pretty good stat sheet, except we didn't shoot the ball as well as we could," head coach Mike Divilbiss said. "That will come though, once we get a better understanding of the system and start playing without thinking about it. I don't know that we have ever had anyone have a night like Katie (Madison) did. The kids were so excited to be playing in the Spectrum again. That floor is a great floor to play on and the environment is a neat one."

Madison was spectacular on the night with 35 points and 15 rebounds. The double-double was her second in the last three games and both were career-highs. Jessica Summers also set a career-high as she went for 19 points.  Summers also completed a double-double as she hauled in 14 boards. Summers was two assists shy of a triple-double as she finished with eight on the night.

The two Vandals posts both were perfect from the free throw line as Summers was 7-7 and Madison 9-9.

"I used to be a five and I know how frustrating it is to not get the ball," Summers said. "So I try to look for Katie to set her up. It's fun to play together."

"It's our home we had to defend it and win. It's pretty sweet to play in the Spectrum," Madison said. "The atmosphere was amazing and when they turned the lights off for introductions I got fired up."

As a team, Idaho shot 22-25 from the free throw line. Eastern was 8-of-12 from the line.

The Vandals didn't score from the field until Summers put in a jumper with 16:34 to play in the first half. At that point Eastern led by four points, 10-6. A 10-4 run gave the Vandals a 16-14 lead with 14:10 to play in the opening stanza.

Idaho finished the half with a slim 33-32 lead. The Vandals poured it on to open the second half with a 14-5 run in the half's first four minutes to push the lead to 47-37. The Vandals never would relinquish their lead in the second half. The Eagles were only as close as five with a jumper by Katy Baker that cut the lead to 59-54 with six and one half minutes to play.

Idaho returns to action this weekend when it travels to Manhattan, Kan., to compete in the Commerce Bank Wildcat Classic. The Vandals open the tournament against Alcorn State. The game is set to tip off at 2 p.m. (PST).
