LOGAN, Utah - Emily Faurholt scored 20 points for the first time in eight games, but her efforts could not stop the University of Idaho from falling to Utah State, 63-53.
The victory for the Aggies (3-18, 2-9) was their third of the season and was the first win over Idaho in the program's history. With the loss, Idaho (8-14, 4-7) can no longer salvage a winning record in the regular season.
"We don't have any excuse," Idaho head coach Mike Divilbiss said. "They were more physical and more aggressive in every phase of the game and they wanted to win more than we did. We had good looks that didn't get finished and we gave up 13 offensive rebounds, which is atrocious. We get what we deserve."
Utah State began the game with a 3-point basket to take an early lead, but Idaho eventually crept back to grab its first lead of the contest at 8-7 with 16:10 remaining. At that point, Utah State put together a 10-0 run to build a nine-point advantage at the 11:42 mark, but Idaho scored the next nine points to tie the game at 17-17 with 8:56 remaining. The teams would tie twice more before Idaho snuck ahead 24-22 at the 5:47 mark. The Aggies hit a 3-pointer on their next possession to spark five lead changes over the final 5:36 of the half. Utah State scored a basket with 29 seconds remaining to earn the final lead change of the half and head to the locker room leading 31-30.
The second half began in similar fashion as the lead changed six times in the first 6:18 of the half. At that point, Utah State went ahead 39-38 and continued a 12-point run that turned into a 49-38 lead with 8:52 remaining. The Vandals went scoreless for a span of 7:09, missing nine consecutive shots and turning the ball over three times. Leilani Mitchell broke the scoring drought with a jumper at the 7:41 mark, but Idaho would get no closer than seven points for the remainder of the contest.
Idaho shot just 3-of-6 from the free throw line in the game and didn't attempt a free throw until the 4:27 mark of the second half. Utah State finished 10-of-16 from the free throw line.
The Vandals also were outrebounded by a 42-30 margin and shot 2-of-12 from the 3-point arc for a season-low 16.7 percent.
"It's their (the players) season now," Divilbiss said. "We have given them all we can give them and I am frustrated because I know we are a better basketball team than how we are playing. We play well at times and other times we don't and I don't know how to explain it. I am as frustrated as I have ever been coaching."
Faurholt led all scorers and shot 9-of-21 from the floor. Mitchell was close behind with 17 points and added nine rebounds and five steals. Summers scored in double figures with 10 points and Felton was the only other Vandal to score as she finished with six points.
Utah State saw great balance as four players finished with 11 points and a fifth scored 10 points.
"The WAC keeps giving us opportunities to crawl back into this thing and we just look like it doesn't mean a whole lot to us and that is disappointing," Divilbiss said.
The Vandals continue their road trip with a game at Nevada Saturday. The game will begin at 2 p.m. Pacific Time.
