Offense struggles in Idaho's 49-43 loss at Nevada

RENO, Nev. - The University of Idaho women's basketball team scored a season-low 43 points and tied a season high with 22 turnovers in a 49-43 loss to the University of Nevada.

The Vandals (8-15, 4-8), losers of seven of their last eight games, shot 15-of-44 (.341) from the floor and struggled from the 3-point arc shooting a season-low 14.3 percent (1-of-7). Nevada (11-14, 7-6) has moved into third place in the Western Athletic Conference and has earned its first winning record in the WAC under third-year coach Kim Gervasoni.

"We can only control two aspects of every game and those are our effort and our attitude," Idaho head coach Mike Divilbiss said. "I am proud of the effort our players showed today against a very good and very physical Nevada team. Unfortunately for us, the effort doesn't guarantee you a victory, it only gives you a chance. This was a defensive battle and both teams had good looks that just didn't go in."

Idaho began the game hitting four of its first five shots to jump out to an 8-0 lead at the 17:08 mark. Nevada scored its first points at the 16:48 mark and later pulled to within two at 8-6. The Vandals then built their lead to 11-6 with 12:31 remaining and continued to hold the advantage until Nevada's Dellena Criner hit a desperation 3-pointer from nearly three feet beyond the 3-point arc with two seconds remaining to give the Wolf Pack a 22-21 lead heading into halftime.

Nevada scored the first four points of the second half, but Leilani Mitchell scored six straight to give Idaho a 27-26 lead with 16:51 remaining. Nevada quickly took the lead back with two free throws on its next possession and would hold the advantage for the remainder of the contest. The game remained close and Idaho trailed 39-37 with 6:08 remaining, but Nevada scored the next eight points to build a 10-point margin and Idaho went four-and-a-half minutes without scoring. The Vandals connected on 4-of-4 free throws in the final 1:38 to help pull to within the final margin of 49-43.

"We need to be more consistent with our effort and play a little better on the road. Part of that is youth and part of that is our lack of depth, but if we play our games with the effort we showed tonight we will be in pretty good shape for the remainder of the season," Divilbiss said.

Mitchell led the Vandals with 14 points and grabbed five steals while Jessica Summers was the only other Idaho player in double figures finishing with 10 points and a team-high eight rebounds. Emily Faurholt, who had just three points at halftime, finished the game with nine points on 2-of-8 shooting. It was only the third time in her career she has failed to record double-digit points and the second time this season. Mitchell and Faurholt also combined for 15 turnovers.

The glaring difference in the game was Nevada's 19-of-44 (.432) shooting percentage. The Wolf Pack turned the ball over 24 times, but Idaho was only able to convert those into 10 points. The Vandals also grabbed nine offensive rebounds but scored just one second-chance point in the contest.

Idaho's 1-of-7 shooting performance from beyond the 3-point line broke a streak of 107 consecutive games with two or more made 3-pointers. The last time the Vandals failed to record two 3-pointers in a game was Nov. 25, 2002, vs. Idaho State. Idaho made 686 3-pointers during the streak for a 6.5 per game average.

The Vandals will continue their three-game road trip at Honolulu where they will take on the University of Hawai'i Wednesday at 9 p.m. PT.
