Vandals suffer fifth-consecutive loss at Fresno State, 68-44

MOSCOW, Idaho - The University of Idaho women's basketball team suffered its fifth-consecutive loss with a 68-44 setback at Fresno State.

The Vandals trailed by just six points at halftime and cut the lead to five points with 19:03 remaining in the game, but a 15-2 run by Fresno State put the game out of reach as the Vandals were outscored 38-20 in the second half.

Fresno State (16-5, 8-1) moves into a tie atop the Western Athletic Conference with the win while Idaho (7-13, 3-6) remains in eighth with the loss.

"Fresno State is a very good basketball team that just keeps coming at you in waves," Idaho head coach Mike Divilbiss said. "Some of it was we ran out of gas and some of it was they are very talented, but we played them a lot better tonight than we did at our place. We are growing and getting better and I am pleased with the way we competed tonight."

The 24-point margin of defeat was Idaho's worst since falling 82-53 at Washington State Feb. 27, 2003.

Leilani Mitchell began the game with five points to give the Vandals a lead and Idaho kept Fresno State off the scoreboard until the 16:20 mark, but Brittani Green's basket sparked an 11-0 Bulldog run that would eventually stretch into a 14-7 Fresno State lead with 11:34 remaining in the half. Idaho got within two points at 17-15, but the Bulldogs scored the next six points to build a 32-15 lead with 5:27 remaining. Fresno State would later build its biggest lead of the half at 27-18 at the 3:25 mark, but Idaho was able to chip into the lead to cut the halftime deficit to 30-24.

Fresno State scored the first points of the second half, but Emily Faurholt, who scored just two points in the first half, cut the lead to 32-27 with a 3-pointer at the 19:03 mark. Faurholt was whistled for her third foul at the 17:54 mark and later picked up her fourth just 32 seconds later as the Vandals were whistled for five fouls in a 1:45 span. The foul would prove costly for Idaho as Faurholt was forced to sit and Fresno State used a 13-2 run to go ahead 47-29 with 13:22 remaining. The Vandals would only get as close as 16 points over the remainder of the game with Fresno State's biggest lead of 24 points coming in the final score of 68-44.

Faurholt ended the game with a career-low seven points and failed to score in double-digits for just the second time in her career. The Vandals were led in scoring by Mitchell, who finished with 15 points, and Jessica Summers, who scored 14 points and grabbed a team-high seven rebounds.

Idaho shot a season-worst 4-of-10 (.400) from the free throw line and lost the rebounding battle by a 43-29 margin. Fresno State also outscored Idaho 32-9 in points off turnovers and 24-8 in second chance points.

The Vandals will return home to the Cowan Spectrum to face San Jose State Thursday (Feb. 9) at 7 p.m.
