Defense playing better, but offense fails in 2-0 loss

EUGENE, Ore. - The University of Idaho soccer team locked themselves into another defensive struggle, but the offense failed to notch a score and the Vandals fell 2-0 at Oregon.

Idaho (0-11-0) held Oregon (5-4-0) to just 11 shots, but only managed one shot of its own in the contest.

"Against a Pac-10 opponent this was a fantastic performance," Idaho coach Pete Showler said. "We pressured the ball high, we possessed the ball better, and our organization was better. The players stepped up and battled everywhere. We had some chances late, but couldn't convert."

The first goal of the contest came in the 18th minute and was the only score of the first half. The insurance goal came late in the game in the 79th minute to put the Vandals away.

"We are close to being where we want to be," Showler said. "The team is beginning to perform better and heading into the conference season we are coming around at the right time."

The Vandals have a break to regroup with no games scheduled for next week. Idaho's next game comes Oct. 3 at Eastern Washington.
