MOSCOW, Idaho - The University of Idaho women's basketball team, couldn't keep up with Western Athletic Conference leader Boise State, Saturday night. The Broncos won in convincing fashion, 85-55.
With the loss Idaho drops to 4-15 overall and 1-7 in the WAC. Boise State improves its record to 16-4 overall and 7-0 in the WAC.
"We had some good looks early on, it was 10-7 and we had three or four possessions where we had a good look at the basket and the ball just didn't go in," coach Mike Divilbiss said. "One thing we did really well Wednesday was to let our defense dictate how we played the game. Tonight we let our offense and a few missed shots early on dictate how we played."
Idaho was outrebounded 60-26 in the game. The Vandals were outrebounded on the offensive end by a 30-6 margin.
"In the 20 years I have been a head coach I have coached against Gordy (Presnell) for 15 or 16 of those years and his teams have always rebounded well. The bottom line is if you give anyone 30 offensive rebounds you won't win many basketball games. It isn't just inside people that get the boards for his teams, his guards; all five people on the floor will go after the basketball. They were 9-35 on first chance shots in the second half, so we were playing good defense. We just didn't finish possessions by blocking out and keeping them off the glass."
"We gave up 25 second chance points tonight, that is pretty much the game right there."
Katie Madison led the Vandals in the scoring column as she scored 15 in the game. Charlotte Otero had an even 10 points and was the only other Vandal in double-digits on the night. Jessica Thompson led five Broncos in double-digits on the night as she had a game-high 16 points. Michelle Hessing had 13 points on the night; Tasha Harris and Jackie Lee each had 12 and Rebecca Kepilino had 10.
Hessing opened the scoring as she put back a rebound of her own shot making it 2-0. Liz Witte answered with an off hand shot from 10 feet sinking the left handed runner in the lane. Thompson quickly gave the Broncos the two point lead again as she hit an 18-footer. A wide open 3-pointer by Lindsey Koppen, gave Idaho their first lead of the game 5-4. The two teams continued to push the ball back and forth and at the first timeout the Broncos held a 10-7 edge.
Boise State then went on a 15-0 run and kept the Vandals from scoring for nine minutes. The Broncos dominated the rest of the half going on a 23-15 run to take a 44-24 lead into the locker room.
The Vandals were much tighter in the second half and Madison had nine of her 15 points in the frame as they tried to fight their way back into the game. Boise State's early lead proved to be too much, however and the
Broncos would go on to win 85-55.
The Vandals return to action when they face San Jose State, Thursday in San Jose, Calif. Tip off is scheduled for 7 p.m., PST
