Vandal women lose to Boise State, 70-40

MOSCOW, Idaho - Despite holding Boise State to 13 offensive rebounds, Idaho's women's basketball team was unable to come away victorious. The Broncos used a strong second half to defeat the Vandals, 70-40, Wednesday night.

Boise State improves its Western Athletic Conference leading record to 18-5 overall and 9-1 in the WAC. Idaho falls to 5-17 overall and 2-9 in the WAC.

"We did a really good job keeping them off the boards," Idaho coach Mike Divilbiss said. "We were much better tonight, than we were at their place. (Jessica) Thompson had 10 rebounds last time. Lindsey Koppen did a nice job keeping her off the boards. We tried to slow them down some and because of that we were having trouble getting Katie (Madison) enough looks inside."

"Let's be real frank though, in a year when we couldn't have any injuries or setbacks, we have had quite a few. These kids have been asked to overcome a great deal. They should be praised for that. Take (Rebecca) Kepilino, (Michelle) Hessing and Thompson out of Boise State's lineup and then ask them to go play. Then just for good measure take (Tasha) Harris out too, because that is what we are doing."

"Keeping your kids focused and competitive when you have those kinds of losses is tough. These kids are doing that and that shows a real maturity."

The Vandals were hampered by several long stretches when shots didn't fall. Idaho suffered a 5:56 drought in the first half. During that stretch Boise State pushed its lead to 12, 16-4. The Vandals ended the game on a 7:19 scoring drought.

Katie Schlotthauer had a quality game in 27 minutes off the bench. She scored a career-high six points and also pulled in a team- and career-high eight rebounds.

After shooting .542 in the first half, Boise State led 34-22 at the break. The Broncos came out strong in the second half and doubled-up the home squad outscoring Idaho 36-18 in the period.

Madison and Liz Witte both had 11 points to lead the Vandals. Led by Thompson's 18, three Broncos were in double-digits. Hessing added 14 points on the night and Jackie Lee poured in 12. Kepilino had a game-high nine rebounds for the Broncos.

Idaho stays at home to face Utah State in the first game of a doubleheader. Tipoff is set for 5:30 p.m. PST.
