Idaho can't handle #19 Hawai`i

Box Score

MOSCOW ? The Vandals forced Hawaii's Heisman candidate Colt Brennan to throw five interceptions, but couldn't create any offense and fell to the Warriors 48-20 in the team's Western Athletic Conference opener Saturday at the Kibbie Dome.

The story of the game was turnovers as the two teams combined to turn the ball over 11 times. Hawaii threw five interceptions and lost a fumble, while Idaho threw five more interceptions, two of which were returned for Hawaii touchdowns.

Idaho scored 10 points off turnovers, but two times after the Vandals took the ball away, they gave it right back with turnovers of their own.

“We've got to do a better job of taking care of the football,” Head coach Robb Akey said. “We've turned the ball over too many times in the last two weeks and we need to get that taken care of.”

Even though the defense forced a lot of turnovers, Idaho corner Stanley Franks said the defense still didn't do enough to win.

“We got a lot of turnovers, but we just gave up too many big plays,” Franks said. “When you give up big plays it makes it too easy for the offense.”

For the offense, nothing really went right in the first half. The Vandals marched down the field on their second drive of the game and answered Hawaii's first touchdown with a score of their own, but then threw and interception on the following drive, then had four straight three-and-outs?followed by two more interceptions.

The only time Idaho's offense gained more than 10 yards in a drive in the first half was on the team's two scores.

Junior receiver Eddie Williams led the Vandals with five catches for 78 yards and scored both of Idaho's touchdowns on the day. First, he took a reverse 18 yards for a score, then he caught a 35-yard fade from quarterback Nathan Enderle for a score in the fourth quarter.

“We had a great game plan, but it's just a matter of executing.” Williams said. “If we have 10 guys doing their jobs and one guy who isn't, we aren't going to be successful on the play.”

After Idaho's first drive ended in a three-and-out, Hawaii took the ball and marched down the field to score. A key pass interference penalty on a third and long kept Hawaii's drive alive. Idaho answered with a score of its own after marching 75 yards in eight plays, but it was all Hawaii for the rest of the half.

After Idaho's touchdown, Hawaii scored 31 straight points until a 50-yard field goal by Tino Amancio with 36 seconds to go in the second quarter put the game at 38-10. The Warriors added another field goal as time expired in the quarter to take a 41-10 lead into halftime.

In the second half, Idaho's offense built a little bit of steam, but another pair of interceptions killed Idaho's chances. The Vandals only gained more than 10 yards on three of their seven drives in the second half.

“I'm not happy with it,” Akey said. “It's not acceptable, but I have to understand that this is where we're at and we have to keep progressing.

“We are a work in progress and we have to continue our progress.”

Kicker Tino Amancio had a pair of long boots as he made field goals of 50 and 49 yards. Once again, David Vobora led the Vandals with 10 total tackles, while Siua Musika had a solid game from the defensive tackle position with seven tackles, including four for a loss, two sacks and a forced fumble.

Deonte Jackson, who played sparingly after injuring his ankle a week ago, rushed for 47 yards on seven carries. Enderle finished the day completing 15-of-34 passes for 186 yards and a touchdown. Punter T.J. Conley also had a solid day for the Vandals, as he booted seven punts for an average of 41.7 yards, including three over 50 yards and three inside the 20 with no touchbacks.

The Vandals will look to end their three-game skid next week as the team heads to San Jose State to take on the Spartans, who enter the game with a 2-3 record on the season. The game kicks off at 1 p.m.
