Idaho excites in 3-1 victory

MOSCOW, Idaho ? The fans at Memorial Gym were treated to an exciting performance by the University of Idaho volleyball team in a 3-1 victory over Utah State Thursday.

After Utah State (5-12, 3-3) rallied to take the first set 25-22, Idaho (11-6, 4-2) rebounded to dominate set two 25-8. The Vandals then rallied from a 24-21 set point deficit to take game three 26-24 and strung together two separate runs of five-consecutive points to take the match with a 25-16 victory in set four.

Idaho's 25-8 victory in set two was just the second time the Vandals have held an opponent under 10 points in a set since rally scoring was instituted in 2001 and the first time since 2004. Idaho joins Fresno State and Hawai`i as the only teams in the Western Athletic Conference to hold an opponent in single-digits.

The Vandals have now won four-straight matches.

“This is a great win,” Idaho coach Debbie Buchanan said. “We put together the things we have been working on. We did a better job with our passing and our offense came together. As the match went on we kept our composure and we didn't give up and allow many runs. We are getting better.”

Haley Larsen had a huge match with 21 kills and a .381 hitting percentage while also totaling nine digs and a season-high four blocks. Anna McKinney also helped out on both ends with nine kills and a .389 hitting percentage while adding 10 blocks. Kelsey James tallied 41 assists while Sarah Loney and Kelsey Yonker each finished with 10 digs. Debbie Pederson also chipped in eight blocks.

Idaho held the Aggies to a .068 hitting percentage and the Vandals have now held three of their last four opponents under the .100 mark. Idaho also held an 18.0-6.0 advantage in blocks.

The Vandals remain at home to take on San Jose State Saturday (Oct. 11) at 7 p.m.
