MOSCOW, Idaho - The Idaho women's basketball team put together a solid overall performance in its 72-55 season-opening win over Eastern Oregon Saturday night in Memorial Gym.
The Vandals shot 40.0 percent from the field for the game, and hit 12-of-32 (37.4 percent) 3-pointers on the night, while committing only 13 turnovers and owning a 48-32 advantage on the glass.
The Vandals hit 8-of-16 3-point attempts in the first half, as they rolled to a 43-21 lead at the break.
"We were trying to take what the defense was giving us," Idaho coach Jon Newlee said. "They were collapsing and giving us a lot of looks from three. If they're going to give them to us, we're going to take them."
Idaho got double-double efforts from two post players in the game. Senior Yinka Olorunnife finished with a team-high 13 rebounds and 10 points in 17 minutes of action, while 6-foot-4 freshman Ashley Walters led Idaho with 11 points and added 12 rebounds, three blocks and an assist in her Vandal debut.
"The last two years (Yinka) has been our best rebounder, and there's no question she's the best rebounder on this team," Newlee said. "She is just so relentless, she just keeps going after it and going after it. It's her energy on the glass more than anything that makes her the rebounder that she is."
Senior Derisa Taleni played a big role for the Vandals in her first game since the 2008-09 season, after missing all of 2009-10 with injury. She finished with eight assists, five points, one block, one steal and just one turnover in 14 minutes of play. The Vandals finished with 18 assists on 28 made field goals.
"Eighteen assists says a lot," Newlee said. "We're always trying to get to 20 assists. Eighteen tonight, that's a nice job, that means we're sharing the basketball and everybody is getting their share of shots."
Junior Shaena Kuehu finished with nine points and seven rebounds for Idaho. Senior Rachele Kloke had nine points, three rebounds and three assists, and Bianca Cheever had nine points and five rebounds, hitting 3-of-6 3-point attempts.
The Vandals held the Mountaineers to just 32.1 percent shooting, and 31.8 percent from 3-point range. Eastern Oregon was led by Kelsea Hurliman, who scored a team-high 11 points and added four rebounds in the game.
The Vandals jumped out to an early 8-0 lead, highlighted by 3-pointers from Olorunnife and Cheever. Idaho's largest lead of the first half would come when junior Keri Arendse sunk a 3-pointer as time expired in the half to put the Vandals up 43-21.
Idaho's lead would balloon to as many as 30, when the Vandals led 63-33 with 11:52 to play in the second half.
The Vandals will be back in action on Nov. 17 when defending Big Sky champion Eastern Washington visits Memorial Gym. Tip-off of that game is at 6 p.m. Idaho will be on the road for its next five games before returning to host Montana on Dec. 8.
